Warning about some of those "special cloths you see advertised, or Shame on Sham WOW!

Recently went to a big festival where they have every known gadget and gee-gaw you can think of, from costume jewelry to kettle corn, to cup-o-livers, to you name it.

While there, we stopped to see a demonstration of something called SHAM WOW.  There was another name on some of the samples: Magic Cloth.  Supposedly made in Germany, called a multi-purpose, super absorbent, man made sponge cloth.

I have seen these advertised on cable mostly as something that will totally soak up pet urine or spills in carpet just by laying the cloth on top of the spill.  They are also said to be great for drying cars in place of a chamois.

Well a friend with us decided to buy, and since they were offering two for one, we split the $20 and bought the package of two rolls of cloths.  Seemed like a good deal at the time, and I wanted to see how they worked on cars.

Got home, followed the instructions, and wet the cloth.  Washed a car with a cloth convertible top, and tried laying the cloth on top to dry it.  Well it kind of worked, by just laying on top and patting lightly it picked up a lot of the moisture, but if you rubbed it the slightest amount, you got a HUGE amount of LINT on the top.  This top was light grey, I would hate to see what it does to black tops.

Next I tried it on the paint.  Bummer.  These things leave a large amount of beads/bubbles of water no matter how much your wring them out or go over the surface.  Worse yet, if you put any pressure at all it could noticeably scratch the paint.

Our Hydra-Wipe Pro is still the best thing for drying cars safely and quickly.

Also, in those tests where the liquid is sucked up by these cloths from carpet, they neglect to mention that the carpet is still very wet.  The old method of stepping on a dry towel to soak of the mess is still the best.  Keep putting dry towels over the spot and step on it and you will get the surface dryer than these cloths.

The lesson is, they really aren't worth buying, but if you do have some or get some, do NOT, repeat, DO NOT use them on fine finishes or painted surfaces.

Keep having fun with your cars and trucks.
