Repairing Cable shift mechanism

By Don Mallinson

The cable shift mechanism in the ’89 through mid-’91 SHO’s has a few fans, but a lot of detractors. When it works right, it is a decent shifter. When it goes wrong, it can be frustrating.

The most common problem is the clip that holds the ball end of the cable onto the shift mechanism at the shifter comes apart. Driveway fixes include tying the parts together with wire, but there is a neat solution, and it comes from the MOPAR parts bin!

Mike Courtney of Courtney’s Truck Service in Minneapolis MN (don’t let the name fool you, they work on a lot of SHO’s) passed along this part number: 04340118 If you order this at a Mopar parts desk, they will probably get you a bag of 6 metal clips. You might get lucky and find some on the shelf and be able to buy just one, but you might have to take the whole bag. I have no idea what the clip does on a MOPAR, but on an S-H-O, it can fix the cable shifter. Mike says to squeeze the clip together a bit closer than as you get it, and then it will fit around the ball end of the cable and hold the two parts together.

Check out the picture, order your part and solve your cable shifter problems!
