SHOClub.com Presents: New 5w-20 oils not approved for use in V8 SHO! Index of Lubrication article BE sure to check out
the full article to fully understand your SHO's lubrication needs. A new TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on oil has been released by Ford. TSB 01-4-7 pertains to the recommended Engine oil in many new Ford and Lincoln/Mercury vehicles. Specifically, it addresses the use of the new 5W-20 engine oil formulation. Many SHO owners and club members have asked about using the new oil in their SHO engines. This TSB lists dozens of engines and vehicles specifically that are approved for use with the new oil. The 1996-2001 Taurus is listed, but if you go into the TSB where they list the specific MOTORS approved for use, the SHO 3.4L V8 is NOT mentioned. The Taurus 3.0L 4V and Vulcan engines are approved for use with the new oil, but the 3.4 V8 is conspicuous in its absence. This might be an oversight, but the TSB does list those 2001 model year vehicles that are NOT supposed to use the new oil. In this list is the Lincoln LS 3.9L V8, along with the 2.5L Ranger, 3.3L Villager, 4.0L Ranger, Explorer/Mountaineer, Explorer Sport, and Explorer Sport Trac, and the 5.0L Explorer/Mountaineer. The 3.9L LS motor is very close in design and application to the 3.4L V8 so I don't think this is an oversight. In any case, if you are concerned about which oil to use, for now, remember that the 3.4L SHO V8 is NOT listed as one of the 1996-2001 vehicles that can now use the 5W-20 oil. Ford specifically says if your motor is not on their list, keep with the owners manual recommendations. That would be 5W-30 for the SHO V8. The SHO V6 is also not listed as recommended to be have the new oil put in it. Copyright 2001 SHOclub.com |
