WINTER 2011

With a new year comes new challenges to those of us that love our cars, and have to drive them in real winter conditions. (you warm weather blokes....I can hear you snickering there!) :)

Here in Illinois there is an epidemic of rusted out brake lines. Used to be that brake lines were a lifetime part of the car, but with more salt on the roads and there is some new stuff they are using in the Midwest that seems to be even worse. Check your brake lines! If your car is more than four or five years old and daily driven in the rust belt, check over all the lines under the car (also check out the body and suspension points). Chances are you will see some rust starting.

Here is a tip: I don't sell this, but Eastwood Company (www.eastwood.com) sells a number of rust solutions, the one I like is POR 15. You can buy direct from POR 15 also. The name stands for "Paint Over Rust". and it works. Follow directions and paint the rusty areas. You may prevent a huge repair bill. If the lines are already fragile or leaking, consider replacing them immediately.

Otherwise, try to keep the vehicle clean with frequent washes, even drive-through automatic systems. Getting the salt/dirt off is more important than a few minor scratches that can be dealt with in the spring. Check out our CAR CARE Tips
